It's not your age. It's your testosterone.

Abstract

Men's testosterone has been falling for decades, independent of age. Modern diets also dropped the organ meats that used to be the richest food sources of zinc, selenium, vitamin B12, vitamin A, CoQ10 and heme iron. Primal Alpha combines two layers: five grass-fed beef organs as a whole-food nutrient foundation, and four botanicals and co-factors (Tongkat Ali, Shilajit, Boron, BioPerine®) that have each been studied in men. This overview summarises the published research behind each part.

1. The problem: a population-wide decline

A large study of American men followed from 1987 to 2004 found that average testosterone levels fell by roughly 1% per year, and that this drop was not explained by ageing alone. Obesity, chronic stress and lifestyle changes are among the factors discussed.

2. The foundation: why organs

Gram for gram, organ meats are among the most nutrient-dense foods available. Beef liver is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin A and B12. Heart is naturally rich in CoQ10. Spleen and kidney supply heme iron and selenium. Testicle provides zinc and selenium. Traditional diets used these parts routinely; most modern diets discard them.

Zinc deserves a special mention: when healthy men were put on a zinc-restricted diet, testosterone dropped; zinc supplementation raised testosterone in marginally zinc-deficient older men.

3. The drivers: botanicals studied in men

Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia)

In a 4-week placebo-controlled study of 63 moderately stressed adults taking 200 mg/day of a standardised root extract, cortisol exposure fell 16% and testosterone status rose 37%. A separate pilot study in physically active older men and women reported higher total and free testosterone and greater muscle strength after 5 weeks.

Shilajit

In a 90-day randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, healthy men aged 45–55 taking 250 mg purified shilajit twice daily had significantly higher total testosterone (about 20%) than the placebo group.

Boron

In a small study, healthy men taking 10 mg boron per day for one week showed a significant rise in free testosterone and a fall in estradiol. Larger trials are needed.

BioPerine® (black pepper extract)

Piperine, the active compound in black pepper, has been shown to increase the bioavailability of other nutrients and plant compounds; in one well-known human study it raised curcumin absorption dramatically.
